Research Areas
Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) hold enormous potential, but remain limited by long calibration times, low accuracy in real-world conditions, and a lack of integration between physiological signals. NEUROLYMPICS brings together the expertise of Techframe, Neroes and the University of Leiria and Oeste to address these limitations through six complementary research areas, ranging from the creation of reference databases to the development of an accessible multimodal BCI device.
CI1. Reference Database
Creation of large-scale neurophysiological datasets. Creation of a large-scale neurophysiological database, gathering thousands of records from hundreds of participants. This database will serve as a reference ("ground truth") for training and validating the project's artificial intelligence models, overcoming the limitations of current databases, which are typically small and lack diversity.
CI2. Advanced AI Models
Machine Learning and Deep Learning applied to the interpretation of brain signals. Development and optimisation of Machine Learning and Deep Learning models dedicated to interpreting brain signals, with dynamic adjustment and real-time personalisation, an area still largely unexplored in current BCI systems.
CI3. Automatic Mental States
Real-time adaptation to the user. Development and optimisation of Machine Learning and Deep Learning models dedicated to interpreting brain signals, with dynamic adjustment and real-time personalisation, an area still largely unexplored in current BCI systems. Automatic identification of the user's mental state from EEG and other physiological signals, allowing the system to adapt to each person without the need for manual calibration in every session.
CI4. Multimodal Interface
Integration of EEG, ECG, EMG and other signals. Combination of the EEG signal with at least three other physiological signals (such as ECG, EMG or EOG), with precise temporal synchronisation, for richer, more accurate and more intuitive control than current bimodal systems.
CI5. Adaptive Video Games
Personalised, therapeutic experience. Creation of two fast-interaction video games that adjust in real time to the player's mental and physical state, with both recreational and therapeutic/cognitive-training applications.
CI6. Multimodal BCI Device
Ergonomics, accessibility and low cost. Design of an ergonomic, comfortable device with a low production cost , built for extended use and to facilitate adoption outside the laboratory.
